I am a dyslexic and dyspraxic educational teacher, lecturer, councillor and consultant. I have written a number of English books on learning differences, including Dyslexia, Dyspraxia and ADHD and also extensive articles on Home Schooling, Assessment and Autism. Having been diagnosed as having Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Irlen Syndrome, ADHD, Central Auditory Processing Disorder and Epilepsy…… amongst other things! This is why I am president and helped set up Dyslexia Centre Australia Inc.(a national charity).
My web site, dyslexiadawnmatthews.com contains scores of pages of helpful information in accessible, simple English and many free, downloadable sheets, including tick tests for all age groups and disabilities. I have taught and will continue to teach others to carry out solution based assessments and teach students of all ages to catch up with basic literacy and numeracy very quickly.
I am currently working on a range of apps, by combining my artistic skills – dawnmatthews.com – with my decades of teaching.. My first range covers most aspects of phonics. The first one “friendlyphonics” in now live and the second covering ‘must know digraphs” is nearly ready, while I am working on the third by tackling a evolutionary new way of teaching the “silent e rule” see www.freindlyphonicsapp.com. I split my time between Thailand and Australia, and enjoy tackling aspects of education that are thought to be impossible.
Mostly I believe that learning should be fun and every student should succeed by exploiting his/her strengths. Confidence and self-esteem are way more important than literacy, although being literate and numerate makes life much easier. If I can learn to post graduate level with all my disabilities then anyone can.
